Savoring the Fall Season

HELLO from the farm!

The chicks have outgrown their woodshed turned brooder. The spots are fading on the baby deer. The wild turkeys are growing fuller every day. The tree leaves are turning glorious shades. The plants are dying back , sinking their energy deep into their roots. I’m reluctantly getting used to the alarm clock ringing and waking me before the sun.

I love the dark crisp morningsjust as much as I loved my curtainless windows allowing the summer sun to blaze in announcing the day had started. It is difficult to get out of bed with the alarm clock (the cup of coffee helps my motivation-this is true). I spent the first week or so feeling stressed that I was no longer on top of my game. Starting my farm responsibilities later in the day seemed irresponsible. Thank goodness I didn’t waste the entire fall and winter season slowly leaking my energy with this foolish worry.

The chicks have outgrown their woodshed turned brooder.

Waking in the dark to the alarm is not my favorite!  Deciding to drink coffee in bed while I mentally plan my day, sitting quietly waiting for the first bird to sound THIS has become my favorite!

Once I’m fully caffeinated, I slip on my boots and begin my chores while everything outside is saturated in a golden hue. The color palette on the farm during these fall mornings is something I never knew existed. I’m still surprised that it does.

The chores still get done, everybody gets fed, watered and run.  The food gets made and eaten, and made and eaten again and everyone is driven where they need to go.

I remain grateful that I accepted the gift of slow mornings during this Autumn season.

Remember November 1 we set our clocks back. However, I’m determined to keep drinking my coffee in bed.
